Insulators are devices installed between conductors at different potentials or between conductors and grounding components, capable of withstanding voltage and mechanical stress. There are numerous types of insulators with various shapes. Although the structures and appearances of different types of insulators may differ significantly, they are all composed of two major parts: insulating components and connecting fittings.

Insulators are a special type of insulating control device that can play an important role in overhead transmission lines. Insulators should not fail due to various electromechanical stresses resulting from changes in environmental and electrical load conditions; otherwise, insulators will not exert significant effects and will compromise the usage and operational lifespan of the entire line.

According to different installation methods, insulators can be divided into suspension insulators and post insulators; according to the different insulating materials used, they can be divided into porcelain insulators, glass insulators, and composite insulators (also known as synthetic insulators).

According to different voltage levels used, they can be divided into low-voltage insulators and high-voltage insulators;

According to different environmental conditions of use, pollution-resistant insulators for use in polluted areas are derived;

According to different types of voltages used, DC insulators are derived;

There are also various insulators for special purposes, such as insulating cross-arms, semiconductor glazed insulators, tension insulators for power distribution, spool insulators, and wiring insulators, etc.

In addition, according to the different possibilities of breakdown of insulating components, they can be divided into two types: Type A, namely non-breakdown type insulators, and Type B, namely breakdown type insulators.


Suspension insulators are widely used for insulation and mechanical fixation of high-voltage overhead transmission lines and flexible busbars in power generation and substations. Among suspension insulators, they can be divided into disc suspension insulators and rod suspension insulators. Disc suspension insulators are the most widely used type of insulator in transmission lines. Rod suspension insulators have been widely adopted in countries such as Germany. Post insulators are mainly used for insulation and mechanical fixation of busbars and electrical equipment in power plants and substations. Additionally, post insulators are often a component of electrical equipment such as disconnectors and circuit breakers. Among post insulators, they can be divided into pin post insulators and rod post insulators. Pin post insulators are mostly used in low-voltage distribution lines and communication lines, while rod post insulators are mostly used in high-voltage substations.
